As I write this I’m currently in the car, all packed up with presents and packages and the people I love, trekking on the open road, all cozy and warm, listening to the soundtrack of Christmas…
“You can’t always get what you want… But if you try sometime you just might find… You get what you need…”
Wait. What?
Not a Christmas song, you say?
Yeah, well. Maybe not. But in my little misfit mind, it’s actually kind of perfect.
Think about it. Two thousandish years ago, God gave us what we needed. Not necessarily what we “wanted”.
When we “wanted” fleeting happiness…
He gave us Joy Incarnate.
When we would have settled for a reprieve from suffering…
He gave us freedom from bondage of all kinds.
When we wished for a way out of the mess we were in…
He gave us Peace in the midst of it, and Hope to overcome it.
When we longed for a new kind of government to bring change…
He gave us the King of Kings. And a handwritten invitation to the Kingdom
That’s what Christmas is about, Charlie Brown… sorry, mixing pop culture metaphors, I mean, Rolling Stones.
You can’t always get what you want.
Thank God.
He gave us what we need.
Merry Christmas!
- And if all that weren’t enough, here’s a brand new pile-o-puppies, born upon Christmas Eve!
Wow! Well said!
